Kenya Handwashing Initiative

Posted on January 24, 2011. Filed under: Uncategorized |

Kenya’s Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing is led by a National Steering Committee, chaired by the Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation.

The Handwashing Initiative is actively involved in organizing workshops and communication campaigns geared towards raising awareness about the importance of handwashing with soap as a means to prevent the spread of disease.

There is a clear need for handwashing promotion campaigns in Kenya, based on results of a research nationwide, which shows that handwashing rates stand at 5% in communities and 1% in schools.

Also, Kenya’s Handwashing Initiative has designed and developed a series of promotional materials specifically targeted at internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in the country.

Fundraising efforts are underway to allow for the implementation of a national programme and help make handwashing with soap an ingrained habit among the population.

PARTNERS: Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Water and Irrigation, Soap and Sanitary Hardware Manufacturers, CSO’s UNICEF, WHO and WSP.
